Downtown Everett, Everett Economy

Due to a water pipe burst and a depressed economy, MYMYTOYSTORE in downtown Everett is shutting down permanently.

When we interviewed the owner in 2022, he was running a toy store on 1806 Hewitt in downtown Everett.

In 2023 after struggling through the pandemic years and decrease in demand for action figures, Tommy Harrison decided to pivot the business to focus on an indoor padded Nerf playzone. All the hard work was washed away when a pipe burst last Sunday in the business above the store.

As Tommy posted on Instagram:

“Exactly a year ago, in January 2023, I started designing a play zone that would extend to the rear of the whole space, a space currently occupied by 6 foot high shelves filled with product and a fulfillment center. I spent the rest of the year making the concept a reality. I spent days, nights, and weekends laying down carpet, gluing foam, purging furniture, and moving inventory. I learned to drywall. I learned how to paint foam like a cosplayer.”

“At about 1pm on Sunday, all the year’s work was undone in 10 minutes when a pipe in the business above my store catastrophically failed. In slow motion horror, I watched water pour down walls and the ceiling in more places than the dozen plastic bins I had could catch. Retail product and blasters had been miraculously spared.”

“The rush of water, though, exposed a deeper problem. How do I operate a storefront when a year of work can be undone so easily? At any moment, this 1910 building, maintained with mostly duct tape and nails, which lacks basic amenities, can have another structural failure. The building can be sold at any moment. When I formalized the play zone concept with the creation of the new company, Planet Mynd Play Lab, I saw almost immediately that the space, no matter how much work I put into it, was not the right fit for the concept.”

Unfortunately, the toy store will shut down permanently. Once the space dries out, the store will be open the rest of the month with clearance products plus some fixtures and equipment for sale. Future energy will be put into roaming NERF parties and events.
