Everett Council Approves Bezos Academy – Pushes Back Red-Light Camera Vote

January 26, 2022

Everett

In their first afternoon session of the new year the Everett City Council had a busy agenda.

The Bezos foundation basically handles everything but the rent. That will be paid by the City of Everett.

The Council unanimously approved a ten-year lease with the Bezos Academy for a free preschool for 60 kids to be established at Everett Station.

We told you about it last week and it is expected to open this fall after extensive remodeling to the space on the north side of the station. Admission will be by lottery once an opening date has been determined.

After a briefing on a plan that was first approved in 2008 to use red light cameras to improve safety at problem intersections, members of the Everett City Council are asking for more information.

9 cameras would cover these 6 locations.

Here is the estimated equipment cost. There would be another 500k in staff cost annually.

Six intersections are proposed for nine red light cameras along with one pair of speed-cameras for a school zone. Concerns over racial equity, the cost of the $124.00 ticket to those with lower incomes and a thought the fine should be less for those living in Everett versus out-of-town residents were all items raised during council discussions.

There was talk that physical safety improvements needed to be made in addition to automated enforcement at the selected intersections in order to ensure that it was truly about safety and not revenue. There was also mention that the city should move away from a focus on car-centric mobility and put more emphasis on improvements for pedestrians, cyclists and users of mass-transit. City Council President Brenda Stonecipher said she would bring the issue back to the council in the future but did not promise any particular timeline.

During the consent agenda the City Council approved the names of eight citizens to make up the Districting Commission finding that they had the needed geographic diversity for a fair representation of Everett, Washington.
