This story serves as a reminder of the isolated seniors in our community and the organizations that help them.

Larry and Leonard’s Skype Friendship

During fall 2022, AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers who serve as Homage Senior Companions in Snohomish County were still making weekly phone calls with some clients because of the lingering COVID-19 virus in the community, but volunteer Larry and Everett resident, Leonard, wanted to try video chats.

They lived too far from each other to visit in-person, so Leonard suggested it and Larry agreed that video chats would be easier for him due to his hearing limitations that made phone calls difficult.

They tried a few others, but settled on using Skype because it was free and allowed for longer conversations. They have been socializing weekly thru Skype ever since, chatting about family histories, experiences and recommending TV shows to each other.

The goal of the Homage Senior Companion program is to create opportunities for individuals 55+ to train to help others in the community by offering social support to isolated residents age 60+ or adults with disabilities. Leonard shares that he and Larry have similar perspectives and that he really enjoys and looks forward to their weekly video chats.

The Homage Senior Companion Program is supported by a grant from AmeriCorps Seniors. For more information email: seniorcompanion@homage.org
