Occupy Everett is set to start occupying the Snohomish County campus in downtown Everett

Tonight was the first general assembly for Occupy Everett. At 7pm about 42 people gathered in the courtyard of the Snohomish County Courthouse in downtown Everett. The gathering was facilitated by a man who gave his name only as Jim. He began by going over ground rules for how the group expected to operate including anti-oppression, respect for others opinions and non-discrimination. He stressed that there were no specific leaders but just members who would take on various roles. The group was then told that Snohomish County Deputy Executive Gary Haakenson had approved a permit to allow Occupy Everett to put up tents on the lawn of the Snohomish County Administration building. They were also told that the county would provide porta-potties and Sheriff’s deputies for as long as they were there. The permit is open-ended with no expiration date and begins Thursday. The assembly then went over several expectations for the occupation including not to interfere with people doing business at the courthouse, be reasonable in dealing with others and don’t speak to the media without approval of the general assembly. The group then began forming the first of its committees including tactical, medical-safety, communications-outreach, legal and food-logistics. The general assembly plans to meet each weeknight at 7pm with meetings on Saturdays and Sundays from Noon – 2pm. No word yet on when they actually plan to put up their tents and begin the occupation of the administration plaza.
