The National Science Foundation is giving Everett Community College a $649,961 grant for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) scholarships and support for low-income students.
The grant, which will be paid out over five years, is part of a larger effort to recruit and retain a more diverse STEM student population.
“This grant is going to be a huge help for students. Not only will they get a strong start at the college in the summer STEM Bridge program, but they’ll get ongoing support with faculty mentoring and scholarships for the whole time they’re at EvCC,” said EvCC physics instructor Kristine Washburn, who co-authored the grant.
The $5,000 scholarships will be awarded every year to 15 of the students selected for the STEM Bridge program for high school seniors.
Are you interested in becoming a scientist, engineer, mathematician, or computer scientist? Through funding from NASA, Everett Community College (EvCC) is offering a program to help students interested in these majors (STEM) bridge between high school and college.
The EvCC STEM Bridge Program will give you a huge jump start on college by enrolling you in a full load of college classes this summer. Students who successfully complete all their classes will receive 12 college credits: College Success in Engineering & Computer Science (Engr 101), Precalculus (Math& 141) or higher depending on placement, and one science class from Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, Geology, or Astronomy.
Students in this program will receive
- Full tuition, fees, and books for the summer quarter
- Financial aid workshop to help fund the rest of college
- Academic coaching
- Personalized advising
- Career exploration field trips
- A cohort experience
Additionally, students who perform well academically may be qualified to receive an additional scholarship of up to $1,250 per quarter ($5,000 per year) for the rest of their time at EvCC, funded through the National Science Foundation.
We are recruiting people in the high school graduating class of 2017 who are interested in majoring in Engineering, Computer Science, Math, Chemistry, Physics/Astronomy, Earth Science, or Biology (not health/medical science).
Minimum Eligibility:
- US Citizen
- Washington state resident
- Able to commit full time this summer (Mon-Fri 8am-5pm)
Preference will be given to students who
- Are female and/or under-represented minorities (Black/African-American, Hispanic, Native American, Pacific Islander)
- Are economically disadvantaged (qualify for free or reduced lunch during high school)
- Place into at least Math& 141 at EvCC by having completed either Algebra II with Trigonometry or Pre-Calculus with a B or better
