Encampment Fires Present Multiple Hazards For Firefighters In Everett, Washington

July 23, 2023

Everett Fire

Sunday afternoon Everett Firefighters spent more than two hours working at an encampment fire at a location they’ve been to multiple times over the last two years. It’s a wooded area between 3rd Avenue SE on the West and 7th Avenue SE on the east south of Everett Mall Way bisected by North Creek in Everett, Washington.

Around 1:30 PM Sunday afternoon multiple Engine Companies and the Brush Truck were dispatched to a fire at an encampment in that wooded area. Crews had to hand carry hose, axes, shovels and other tools several hundred yards into the woods.

In addition to the terrain, firefighters faced obstacles including dozens of shopping carts, human waste, active hornets nests, propane tanks hung from trees and scattered around the area that was burning.

Crews also have to not only put water on the fire but to dig into the ground to expose roots burning and embers that may have gotten into tree trunks or floated up into branches setting spot fires in the tree canopy. Here are some photos of the conditions the crews faced while working on this particular fire in south Everett Sunday. Click photo to enlarge.
