Everett City Council Holding Rare Monday Morning Special Meeting Over Arlington, WA Pride Event

July 16, 2023

Everett Government

City Council

The Everett City Council usually meets at 6:30PM Wednesday nights.

At last Wednesday’s Everett City Council meeting, Councilmember Liz Vogeli asked for a resolution by her fellow councilmembers in support of those attending and holding the Pride Festival in Arlington, Washington that is coming up this Saturday July 22nd. Her motion was seconded by councilmember Mary Fosse.

Their resolution would proclaim support for the Arlington LGBTQIA+ Community and call for the City of Arlington to adequately enforce proactive safety measures against hate crimes and intimidation including enforcement of RCW 9.41.300, the 250 foot open carry buffer zone.

Councilmember Fosse said calling for the simple enforcement of State law is a pretty soft request but shows the City of Everett’s solidarity and is really important.

Some other Councilmembers and the Mayor expressed concerns over telling another City what to do while at the same time wanting to make sure to publicly support the LGBTQIA+ community as a whole. You can see the full discussion of resolution versus proclamation idea here.

After some discussion it was decided to do further research and hold a special Everett City Council meeting before the next scheduled Arlington City Council meeting on the evening of the 17th. So here is the agenda for the Everett City Council meeting on Monday morning at 8:00 AM which will be held virtually.
