He grew up in south Central Los Angeles and been cooking all of his life, it was one of his chores growing up. He’s also lived across the country and internationally.
“My brain is full of everything,” he told me with a smile. “I’m a chef, not a backyard cook and I got flavor and you know everyone likes flavor.”
Avery also told me he works hard. Up to sixteen hours a day six days a week. Lew’s BBQ is open from 12 Noon – 7 PM Monday through Saturday. He’s closed on Sundays.
Sliders are featured Monday – Wednesday, Soul Food Platter Thursday – Saturday, a fan favorite is their “Mac & Meat Bowl” plus Lew’s also offers catering. “I have a wide menu including BBQ South of the Border with my own spin on things,” he said. “And nobody does black-eyed peas like I do.”
Lew’s BBQ is much more than just great food. “This is a lighthouse for the community,” Avery explained. “I’ve experienced homelessness and addiction and overcome that and I have a calling to give back.”
A number of years ago Avery Lewis started “Feed the Need”. A day of outreach, food, resources, music and more. Past events have included toy drives, free chili, clothing donations and even car shows.
This year “Feed the Need” is set for Saturday July 22nd from 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM in front of the Vision Church at 1917 California Street in downtown Everett, Washington. The street will be closed, stage set up and Avery Lewis promises an afternoon of entertainment, joy, food, hope and healing. It’s all free for anyone who’d like to come.
Avery’s also a relative newlywed. He’s been married about a year to Karen, a childhood friend he re-connected with after 45 years. She’s been working with him in the restaurant.
