Scammers Targeting City Of Everett Utility Customers

September 10, 2020

Everett

People in Everett, Washington are being warned about a utility bill scam. Here’s a notice put out Thursday from Everett Public Works.

A warning today from Everett Public Works about a utility bill collection scam.

Multiple City of Everett utility customers have received calls falsely accusing them of being behind on their account and demanding payment. The City’s utility services office would like customers to know that they should not pay anyone calling and demanding an Everett utility payment. The utility takes payment over the phone but does not call customers to collect payment. If someone contacts you demanding payment for a delinquent water utility bill, please end the call and report it to Everett Police (425-407-3999) and Everett utility services (425-257-8999).

This scam poses a danger to customers’ finances, and the utility urges all customers to remain vigilant regarding questionable collection practices. Everett’s utility services will never threaten customers as account management is focused on working with customers to keep them in service. In addition, disconnections for non-payment have been temporarily suspended due to Governor Inslee’s proclamation.

Under normal conditions, when accounts are delinquent, Everett’s utility services sends customers a friendly reminder the day after their accounts are overdue, and a yellow disconnect notice is hung on the customer’s door before water is shut off. Once the yellow notice is hung, customers have two days to pay their bill or work out payment arrangements.

If you are behind on your utility bills, please contact Everett’s utility services directly at 425-257-8999 to discuss your account with a specialist. More information about the Everett’s utility services can be found at everettwa.gov/ub.
