One Week Until Everett Plastic Bag Law Goes Into Effect

The bag ban goes into effect in Everett, Washington next Monday, September 30th.

New carryout bag guidelines take effect Sept. 30 for Everett’s reusable bag ordinance. The ordinance, approved by the Everett City Council on Dec. 5, 2018, prohibits retailers from distributing single-use plastic carryout bags, with a few exceptions to protect public health and safety.

The intent of the ordinance is to reduce waste and protect the environment by encouraging the use of reusable bags. Retail establishments may provide large recycled paper bags and/or thick reusable plastic bags at a 5-cent (minimum) fee. Small paper and plastic bags used to protect items (i.e., produce, flowers, bakery items) are still allowed. Additionally, the ordinance does not apply to newspaper bags, door-hanger bags, tire bags, laundry or dry cleaning bags and bags sold in packages.

The City continues to offer a free reusable bag to Everett residents who pledge to use less plastic. The bags are available at the City’s utility billing counter, 3101 Cedar St., while supplies last.
