Back in April of this year one of those stores, Mari J’s Highway Pot Shop, in the Eastmont neighborhood closed. Now a new store has opened to bring the number of retail marijuana stores back to five.
The doors have quietly opened at Kushman’s located in south Everett at 8911 Evergreen Way. This is the third location for Kushman’s who also have stores in Lynnwood and Mukilteo.
The owner says their grand opening is set for Friday June 14th at 7:30 AM. The store is in the former Tobacco House location which has been empty for a couple of years.
While empty the owner of Kushman’s paid rent on the space and had plans ready to go when the opportunity to open an Everett retail location presented itself. That chance was floated back in the Spring of 2018 when the Everett City Council revisited a 2016 decision to allow just five of the ten total retail pot licenses authorized by the State. After much discussion the Council maintained the number at five stores within the City limits.
Kushman’s and four other parties each held approval from the State to open in Everett but without city approval the State permit was not valid. With the closure of Mari J’s and a location that was ready to go, Kushman’s got City of Everett approval to take that fifth spot. The owner says he’s still working to get the City to allow those other five slots.
While Mari J’s may have closed, some of the employees of that location are coming to work at Kushman’s on Evergreen Way. The store will employ more that a dozen employees total. Kushman’s will be open seven days a week from 8 AM – 11:30 PM. It offers edibles, medical, concentrates, pre-rolls and CBD products. The store also has a large educational focus with experts to guide people who are new or may be revisiting marijuana use from their school days decades ago.
