Westbound Trestle Closures Returning Later This Month To Complete Paving Project

Time for the west end of the westbound trestle to get finished.

A heads up from the Washington State Department of Transportation for full closures of the Hewitt Avenue Trestle into Everett later this month.

One year ago, on a highway not far away, contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation began a repaving project of the westbound lanes of the US 2 trestle. Following a months-long postponement, they will return to finish the expansion joint repair and paving they began last spring.

When cold and wet weather moved in last September, crews postponed the work in order to ensure as long a life as possible for the roadway. This summer, up to two additional weekend closures of westbound US 2 between Snohomish and Everett are needed to repave and repair the section of the trestle between the Snohomish River and Interstate 5.

Westbound US 2 closed from 7 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday:

  • Friday, June 21 – Monday, June 24
  • Friday, June 28 – Monday, July 1

In the event weather postpones the work, we have identified potential backup closure weekends.

  • Friday, July 12 – Monday, July 15
  • Friday, July 19 – Monday, July 22
  • Friday, August 2 – Monday, August 5

Keeping traffic moving

Detour routes will again use State Route 9. To keep traffic moving, and prevent large backups, travelers need to check real-time traffic conditions on the WSDOT traffic app and the WSDOT Traffic Twitter feed. Failure to stay engaged is the path to the dark side – and lengthy traffic delays.

2018 Project accomplishments

  • Repaved 2.5 miles of westbound US 2 from Bickford Avenue to I-5.
  • Repaved 1 mile of eastbound US 2 between SR 204 and Bickford Avenue.
  • Installed enough waterproof matting to cover nearly seven football fields.
  • Repaired portions of the trestle structure to reduce the need for potential emergency work.

Other work on US 2

US 2 travelers will notice an “asphalt alliance” of sorts with a second [bit.ly/US2toGoldBar]preservation and safety project happening between Bickford Avenue and Gold Bar. New pavement, wider medians, repaired and replaced expansion joints will keep the highway in good condition, able to support the county’s growing population and the 40,000 people who currently use this stretch of US 2 every day.
