As letter carriers returned from their routes on Saturday, May 9, they brought back more than their usual truckload of mail to the Everett Post Office. With volunteers standing by to help, letter carriers unloaded thousands of yellow bags filled with donations for this year’s Letter Carriers Food Drive. 42 volunteers assisted at two Everett sites over the course of the day, unloading, sorting and moving food donations that poured in from the community.
When all was said and done at both Everett sites, over 61 large totes full of food were collected, and loaded onto trucks provided by Hogland Transfer Company.

County-wide, over 126,300 pounds of food were collected just from the four largest post offices. As other collection locations report their numbers over the coming days, this number will increase. Donations collected as part of this year’s Letter Carriers Food Drive will provide over 90,000 meals for food insecure children, families and seniors in Snohomish County. These donations also account for half of the food collected in our county each year, making this the largest single-day drive in the area.

“We’re so pleased with the generous outpouring of support from the Everett community,” says Bob Reese, Executive Vice President of Snohomish County, Volunteers of America Western Washington. “Many families in our area are food insecure, and these donations will feed kids throughout the summer and beyond.”

Although the food drive is a national event, here in Snohomish County it is organized by National Association of Letter Carriers Local 791, Volunteers of America Western Washington, United Way of Snohomish County and the Snohomish County Labor Council<http://www.snolabor.org/>.
