Everett Council Says Yes To YMCA Partnership

Everett YMCA

The park is at the south end of the property with parking on the north side.

In 30 years or so people are going to look back and realize what a great opportunity this was.

That was the message expressed by both members of the Everett City Council and the YMCA of Snohomish County Wednesday night after a unanimous vote by council members to approve a partnership with the Y that will bring a new park to central Everett and allow city residents to use a modern pool featuring popular amenities without having to join the YMCA.

Since 2016 leaders of the YMCA had been working with Everett City staff on a plan to partner on a park and expanded pool on property the Y had purchased from the Everett School District in the 4700 block of Colby Avenue. After much back and forth the YMCA is donating the southernmost acre of property to the City to use as a community park. The park will be built by the city and is expected to be ready by the end of 2020.

The City is also providing $2.5 million in funding over four years for the YMCA project. That money comes from payments to the City of Everett’s park fund in a property agreement with Cemex and does not involve money from the general fund. In exchange, the YMCA will provide a minimum of 74.5 hours of pool access per week for non-YMCA member Everett residents for 25 years. Community access fees will be determined by the City in consultation with the YMCA. Pool access fees will be paid back to the City. The pool will be a six lane competition pool complete with diving blocks and timing system for local high school swim meets. There is also a second pool that offers zero depth entry, lazy river feature and also hot tub, spa, sauna and locker rooms.

Wednesday morning the YMCA Board of Trustees approved the agreement. Wednesday night the Everett City Council gave its blessing. The official groundbreaking is set for June 9th at 10 AM. In addition to the YMCA, Big Brothers Big Sisters will have their mentoring center at the facility. The address is 4730 Colby Avenue.
