Much more than a library, Everett Community College is inviting the public to get a look inside the new Cascade Learning Resource Center across from the EvCC Campus. Here are the details.

Everett Community College will celebrate on Sept. 28 the grand opening of its newest building, the Cascade Learning Resource Center.

The event, including a ribbon cutting ceremony and self-guided tours of the three-story building, is open to the public and starts at 3 p.m. at 1001 North Broadway.

“This airy and light-filled building is a place for all learners, including EvCC’s students, faculty and staff,” said Dr. Chemene Crawford, EvCC’s president.

The 65,000-square-foot building is the new home of the John N. Terrey Library, the Tutoring Center, the Writing Center, the Russell Day Gallery, eLearning, Instructional Media Services, and the Center for Transformative Teaching.

The library collection includes more than 58,000 books and 230,000 ebooks — including many textbooks for EvCC classes — 4,000 DVDs, 1,600 CDs, 200 audiobooks and dozens of newspapers and magazines. Students can use many quiet reading areas, 14 individual study rooms, and 13 group study rooms, including a child-friendly space where priority is given to student parents.

The architect for this project was Mithun, a multidisciplinary design firm that has provided planning and design services for more than 30 projects at community and technical colleges across the state including libraries for North Seattle College, Grays Harbor College and Peninsula College.

The general contractor for the project was Mortenson, which also constructed EvCC’s Gray Wolf and Whitehorse halls along with several other state-of-the-art educational environments locally and nationally including, the University of Washington Odegaard Undergraduate Learning Center renovation and the Seattle University Lemieux Library expansion.

The Cascade LRC joins the Advanced Manufacturing Training and Education Center and Washington State University-Everett on the east side of EvCC’s campus. Next year, the design process will begin for another nearby building, which will replace the college’s 1962 Baker Hall and add instructional space and a theater.
