Everett Streets Update Thursday Afternoon Edition

Just got back from a drive around the major roads in Everett including Broadway, Evergreen Way, Everett Mall Way, Rucker and West Marine View Drive. All were in pretty good shape at this point. The challenge may come tonight as temps get down into the 20s and things freeze. Side streets in neighborhoods are still pretty much compact snow and ice with feeder streets to the arterials a bit better. Here’s an explanation from Everett Public Works on how they approach plowing the streets. – LD
Compact snow and ice and super cold temperatures can make plowing difficult. Much like shoveling snow on an icy sidewalk, the plows work to push loose snow off the road rather than scrape or chisel the ice off the pavement (think of a giant squeegee). The back of the plow then applies sand to improve traction for cars and salt to help melt and break up the ice so it can be cleared. We are going to see some really cold temperatures again tonight and tomorrow which means slippery roads. Stay home if you can, and if you do need to head out – check conditions before you go (everettwa.gov/trafficcams), give yourself plenty of time and space on the road, and drive safe! Thanks to our Public Works team for this great shot of plows in action and for all their hard work to keep Everett moving!
