Editor’s Update Tuesday May 8th 9:33 AM: The YMCA sent along the following clarifications this morning to our article. The YMCA of Snohomish County and the City of Everett have been in discussions regarding a recreational partnership since spring of 2016. YMCA is donating the southernmost acre of property to the City to use as a community park. The park will be built by the end of 2020. The City is providing $2.5 million in funding over four years for the YMCA project. In exchange, the YMCA will provide a minimum of 74.5 hours of pool access per week for non-YMCA member Everett residents for 25 years. Community access fees will be determined by the City in consultation with the YMCA. Pool access fees will be paid back to the City.

In addition, the YMCA is not building an “Olympic” size pool. It will be a six lane competition pool complete with diving blocks and timing system for local high school swim meets.

The park is at the south end of the property with parking on the north side and the facility in the middle.

The park would be on the south end of the property across the street from a path leading to the interurban trail.

This Wednesday night the Everett City Council is expected to take a vote on providing 2.5 million dollars in cash plus paying for the design and building of a park at the new Everett YMCA under construction in the 4700 block of Colby Avenue at the former site of the Everett School Administration building.

For more than a year negotiations have been ongoing between the YMCA and the City of Everett. In exchange for the two million, five hundred thousand dollars residents who live within the city limits of Everett will have access to the pool without having to join the YMCA. The Y will charge an admission fee which will be remitted back to the City of Everett to recover the cost of the $2.5 million. The term for the YMCA to turn over the entrance fees to the city will be 25 years.

The pool will consist of both a competition pool along with a separate pool with zero depth entry, lazy river feature and also hot tub, spa, sauna and locker rooms.

With regards to the park, the YMCA will give the city land on the south end of the property. (This area has been used by the public as an unofficial dog park for the last several years) In exchange the City of Everett will plan, budget, design and build the park by December of 2020. The city will also be responsible for naming of the park which is going by Glacier View Neighborhood Park for now.

Demolition of the school administration building is almost complete with the official groundbreaking set for June 9th from 10 AM – 1 PM. You can learn more about what will be in the new Everett YMCA complex here.

The Everett City Council final discussion and vote on the matter is scheduled for their meeting this Wednesday night at 6:30 PM in council chambers at 3002 Wetmore Avenue. You can see the proposed agreement and terms here.
