Walker started playing in 2003 and says playing hockey and interacting with different coaches has shaped who he has become.
“The different insights, different styles have all made an impact on me,” Walker added. “The commitment and passion to play hockey makes it hard to stay away.”
But he is going to step away from hockey for a time. In addition to coaching young hockey players this is Walker’s first year as a full time student at Seattle Bible College.
Next month he is heading with a group from the college to the Philippines to spread what he calls love and light.
“We’re going to be doing outreach and spreading encouragement and sharing our faith,” said Walker. “One third of those living in the Philippines are under the poverty line. We are going there to love on people and support them in learning of the faith and not just that, but to help sustain them anyway they may need.”
If you’d like to help Walker, he has a gofundme page where interested folks can contribute.
Getting back to hockey and coaching teens Walker says he feels that he is a life coach in addition to a sports coach.
“These kids come here and sometimes it’s the only place where they get to be heard on a level where they best communicate.” He adds, “They bring everything into the rink and sometimes things are a lot deeper than the game and I love listening to them and working with them on all levels.”
