Audio way-finding maps and sensory garden paths complete Lions park upgrade
The city of Everett Parks Department says recent improvements will make Lions Park in South Everett the park of choice for the visually impaired. Yesterday the Everett City Council got a sneak peek at two new features at Lions Park. The first is an audio wayfinding system which allows visually impaired people to download directions and narrative maps that direct them into and thru the park. The maps can be downloaded to an I-pod, smart phone or specific readers. The city says it’s the first use of web-based wayfinding technology in a public park in the United States. The second addition at Lions Park is a sensory garden path which winds thru the west side with different signs in print and braille that allow people to learn more about the plants and landscape.
The city is also installing a braille tactile map on each side of the park so visually impaired people can feel the layout of the park. All of the improvements cost $19,800.00 and were paid for in part by a donation from the Everett Lions Club. You can access the maps and other downloadable information by clicking here. Everett City Councilman Ron Gipson and several others on the council praised the city’s Parks Department for taking Everett park improvements to such a high level.
