The Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a fire that destroyed an Everett area daycare center Sunday night as arson.
The two-alarm fire caused more than $450,000 damage at the Red Apple Preschool and Child Care in the 2700 block of 86th St. SE in the Eastmont neighborhood in unincorporated Snohomish County southeast of Everett.
Neighbors called 9-1-1 at 9:08 p.m. on Sunday to report the fire. One caller described seeing flames “at the base of the building.” When firefighters arrived minutes later, the 4,600-square-foot building was engulfed in flames, according to Leslie Hynes, public information officer for Snohomish County Fire District 1.
“The rapid advancement of the fire and the large volume of fire were two factors that made investigators suspect this was arson,” she said.
Investigators from the Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s Office have determined the fire started in the daylight basement, then quickly spread throughout the two-story structure. They are not releasing information about how the fire was started. Investigators believe this arson is an isolated incident.
No suspects have been identified. Investigators are asking for anyone with information about the fire to call 1-800-55-ARSON. There is a $10,000 reward from the Arson Alarm Foundation for information leading to the arrest and criminal conviction of the persons responsible for the fire.
