Labor Dispute Halts Activity at Port of Everett

September 8, 2011

Everett, Everett Jobs

The only noise at the Port of Everett today is being made by barking sea lions as this Russian ship sits still.

A dispute over grain has led to the shutdown of operations at the International Shipping Terminal at the Port of Everett. Everett Port Spokesperson Lisa Lefeber told me this morning that at about 1:30am longshoremen walked off the job. Currently one ship is affected, a Russian ship carrying oil and gold mining equipment. Lefeber says no Boeing cargo has been affected so far and they are in a holding pattern for now.

I also talked with Steve, a dispatcher at the International Longshoremen’s hall on Hewitt in Everett. He says that today about 30 people are affected. He says there are longshoremen willing to work but since there is no checker to send cargo on or off the ship there is nothing for the longshoremen to do. The Seattle Times has the latest update on the labor action that has also stopped international shipping at the Ports of Seattle and Tacoma.
