Remote work has emphasized the importance of living space, and after a decade of shrinking apartments, renters are set to get the extra room they’ve been looking for.

In our latest study, we analyzed floorplans in buildings under construction from 92 cities. 33 of them are building larger units than they did 5 or 10 years ago, adding just enough space for a home office, a bathroom, or another type of accommodation that can provide a lifestyle upgrade. Everett is the top trend leader nationwide, currently building the largest apartments in the country.

Here are the highlights:

Apartments in Everett are getting bigger. Developers are currently building units with a whopping 267 sq. ft. of additional living space compared to five years ago. This makes new apartments in Everett highly comfortable in terms of living space.

Everett’s newly built units will have an average size of 1,195 sq. ft., ranking as the largest new apartments in the nation. This is significantly more space than the average size of apartments delivered since 2016 (928 sq. ft.)

Three other Seattle suburbs secured a spot among the top cities nationwide that are building bigger apartments.

Kirkland is building units with an extra 211 sq. ft. of space. Auburn renters are getting apartments that are 87 sq. ft. larger, while in Redmond, developers extended their plans by 34 sq. ft.

In Seattle, however, apartments under construction are 64 sq. ft. smaller than those delivered in the last 5 years (602 sq. ft.). Generally, Emerald City is known for having some of the smallest apartments in the country.

The pandemic has significantly accelerated issues on designers’ minds well before 2020. These issues involve the rise of the home as a workspace and a deeper emphasis on health and well-being.” said Doug Ressler, manager of business intelligence at Yardi Matrix.
