Once power was secured heavy duty fans are brought in to vent the gas from the interior of the house.

A gas leak caused by a flooded basement led to a few nervous moments for a central Everett neighborhood Saturday afternoon.

Around 3:30 PM Everett Firefighters were called to a house in the 6600 block of Highland Drive in central Everett. Puget Sound Energy crews were at a house that had a serious gas leak with fumes building up inside the home. They shut the gas off to the house.

It appears the home’s basement began flooding after the recent heavy rains. The rising water caused a problem with a gas pipe which began leaking.

As a precaution, Everett Firefghters evacuated people from homes on either side of the house and across the street. The smell of gas drifted through the neighborhood from the open front door of the house.

The Snohomish PUD was called to shut off power to the house along with the area immediately nearby to lower the chance of an explosion.

Once power was shut off, crews were able to get inside the basement, confirm a bad pipe and begin process of venting the gas out of the house.

That took about an hour with the use of high powered fans from an Everett ladder truck.

No one was injured and neighbors were let back into their houses around 4:45 PM.

Here are a few MyEverettNews.com photos of the activity in the neighborhood.
