At tonight’s City Council meeting in Everett, Washington Mayor Cassie Franklin announced she was promoting Deputy Chief John DeRousse to lead the Everett Police Department.

“I’ve seen John’s leadership in action over the last several years and have been genuinely impressed,” said Franklin. “He is well-prepared to take the helm of this department and fill this vital role in our city.”

DeRousse has been with Everett Police for 25 years after coming to the City following four years as a deputy with the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office. With EPD he has worked as an officer, sergeant, lieutenant and captain before being promoted to deputy chief in 2018.

As one of two deputy chiefs, DeRousse led Operations and Patrol Divisions. According to the City, he has played major roles in several key initiatives like rebuilding the Child Abduction Response team, launching the Community Outreach and Engagement Team (COET) and rolling out the regionwide Violent Crime Reduction Unit.

DeRousse also has an extensive amount of training and education, including master’s degrees in criminology and Homeland Security Science, certification in executive leadership from the FBI National Academy and more.

During his remarks DeRousse said, “Our problems in this community are real. The gun violence and the drug and untreated mental health crisis…they task the Everett Police Department, they task this community in ways that seem like real dilemmas and they seem unsolvable. I think they’re challenging but they’re not unsolvable. We need whole community solutions to focus on these whole community issues and we at EPD, certainly under my leadership, we’re committed to doing the hard work at the direction and collaboration with the Mayor and Council and a lot more people in our community.”
