Editor’s Note: On June 18th candidates in the August 1st Primary Election for Everett City Council Districts, Everett School Board and Port of Everett Commissioner along with Snohomish County offices including Everett voters were invited to send a statement up to 500 words to MyEverettNews.com introducing themselves to our readers. Invitations were sent to the email address on file with the Snohomish County Auditor. Not all of the candidates responded but we are publishing unedited statements from those that did reply by our deadline. We think this is a good way for you to hear directly from the people running. Judy Tuohy – Everett City Council #7

Everett is my home; I grew up in the Seahurst and Claremont neighborhoods. My father was an electrician and lifelong member of IBEW 191. My mother was an active leader in Everett, serving our City on various boards and volunteer positions.

I earned my bachelors from Central Washington University. I’ve worked in education, retail, and, for the past 28 years, as the Executive Director of the Schack Art Center.

I have proudly served on Everett City Council for nine years. During that time, I was the catalyst for the Evergreen Branch Library expansion, initiated Council liaisons to the 19 Neighborhood Associations, and served as Chair of the Public Safety Committee. I have championed measures to ensure a safe community and high quality of life for all residents, through housing options, jobs, climate initiatives, and human services for those in need. Everett received over $20 million in Federal Covid relief, and I am ensuring we use those dollars wisely to invest in measures that benefit all of Everett.

I am running for re-election because I believe in Everett’s potential. I have a track record of leadership, collaboration, and hard work. I know we can build a bright future for Everett and create a community that we can all be proud of.

My top three priorities for the next four years include:
• Affordable housing for all, finding solutions for our unsheltered population and addressing the root causes of homelessness. We need a comprehensive approach that not only puts people in homes but helps them stay there long term.

• Living wage jobs and job training for those who call Everett home. Everett is a growing community and bringing in new jobs will allow our economy to grow sustainably.

• A safe community. Everyone has the right to be safe in their homes and neighborhoods. I will continue to collaborate with Police and Fire professionals to ensure safety for our businesses, schools, parks and neighborhoods. I will also step-up regional efforts to tackle the fentanyl crisis and provide help for those with substance abuse.

I have more than 28 years of success in building a vibrant downtown, job creation, retail, tourism, affordable housing, and quality of life amenities. My track record of balanced leadership and experience will be needed as we navigate the coming four years, when Everett will experience significant growth and development. We must ensure the inevitable changes are favorable, to build a stronger Everett so our city is well positioned for future generations.
