Everett Stabbing Victim Out Of Hospital – SCSO Says Attack Was Random

A Community Transit bus at Everett Station Wednesday night. CT says 18 more Transit Security Officers are being hired.

Just before 5:30 p.m. yesterday, Transit Unit deputies and Everett Police responded to Pacific and Broadway for reports of an assault on a bus. Upon arrival, deputies located the victim, a 49-year-old man, with a stab wound to the back of his neck. Witnesses reported the suspect had fled from the area on foot. The victim was transported by aid to Providence Regional Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He has since been released from the hospital.

During the investigation, deputies learned the suspect and the victim both boarded the bus at the Everett Transit Station. They were not known to each other and did not communicate with one another. The suspect boarded the bus and sat near the back, while the victim sat near the middle of the bus. As the bus approached a stop at Pacific and Broadway, the suspect removed a knife from his backpack, walked towards the exit door, stabbed the back of the victim’s neck, and quickly exited the bus and ran.

Transit Unit deputies responded and retrieved surveillance footage of the suspect. Around 10 p.m., Community Transit’s Transit Security Officers, who were in field training, spotted the suspect walking near Broadway and 14th in Everett. They notified Transit Unit deputies and the Everett Police Department. Law enforcement responded to the scene and arrested the suspect without incident.

The 28-year-old suspect was arrested for first-degree assault and booked into the Snohomish County Jail. His backpack was recovered as evidence and is pending approval of a search warrant. This remains an active investigation.

“We are in the process of increasing security on our buses and are pleased that our new Transit Security Officers played a role in apprehending the suspect. We plan to have 18 new Transit Security Officers on patrol by the end of the year as an additional layer of security personnel on our buses and at stations,” said Monica Spain, Community Transit spokeswoman.
