A heads up for drivers who use Broadway between 34th and Everett Community College…
The first phase runs between 34th and Pacific with future bulbs added moving north.
The project creates new bus “bulbs” that extend the sidewalk into the parking lane at bus stops between 34th Street near the YWCA and Tower Street near Everett Community College. Most of the bus bulbs will include a new shelter, bench, bike rack, and garbage can.
Construction is expected to last for up to six months, with each stop taking two to four weeks to complete. As bus bulbs are completed, the construction contractor will move north. Normal work hours are expected to be 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and some work may be done on Saturdays and Sundays to lessen the impact on businesses.
“We appreciate the public’s patience as the construction crew works to minimize impacts to people driving, busing, biking and walking,” said Tom Hingson, Everett Transit’s director. “In the end, the project will benefit all who travel on this stretch of road, keeping them safer, improving our transit system, and enhancing one of Everett’s most important streets.”
Project Highlights
The bus bulbs allow buses to stop in-lane rather than pulling in and out of traffic, which provides many benefits:
- Reduces traffic collisions.
- Reduces the amount of stop time for a bus and improves the overall speed and reliability of the transit system.
- Improves the safety of pedestrians and bus riders.
- Enhances the streetscape.
The project will also include accessibility improvements at 13 intersections, and the addition of 18 new parallel parking spaces along the corridor. The City’s Cultural Arts team is working with an artist to include artwork as part of the project.
The project is possible thanks to a $3 million grant through the Legislative Evaluation and Accountability Program (LEAP) of the state 2015 Connecting Washington package.
