Police converged on Banner Bank while a robbery suspect calmly sat inside.

One of the strangest bank robbery attempts in recent memory took place in downtown Everett late yesterday afternoon.

According to probable cause papers submitted by Everett Police, mid-day yesterday a 60-year-old man called the Banner Bank in the 2500 block of Colby. He asked what time the manager would be in and was told around 4:30 in the afternoon.

Around 4:45 PM the man walked into the bank wearing a black suit, fake beard, sunglasses, a nylon hair net and a baseball cap. He asked for the manager but was advised the manager was not available and was seated with a bank employee. He told that person he wanted a loan for $26,000.00 in fifty and one hundred dollar unmarked bills.

He reportedly told the employee his nephew was waiting outside the bank with a high powered rifle and if any police showed up the nephew would come in and shoot everyone. He had a note with detailed instructions and also asked for keys to an employees car. The man stayed seated at the desk with the employee while police were summoned.

Everett Police arrived and detained the man and were unable to locate any nephew outside or in the immediate vicinity. They booked him into the Snohomish County Jail on probable cause for 1st degree robbery. He will face a first appearance in front of a judge this afternoon.
