Martin Lumber and Siskun Power Equipment are happy that traffic once again will flow past their front doors.
Crews closed the Broadway Bridge to traffic on Jan. 30, 2015 while they demolished and replaced the 102-year-old bridge and built a new bridge from the foundation up.
The total project budget, including design and construction, is $13.6 million.
It’s taking time for motorists to adjust to the re-opening as MyEverettNews.com watched as some stopped at the green light as if they couldn’t believe it was real.
There is still some work to do as crews install lighting and a permanent pedestrian barrier.
The bridge will be closed to parking and drivers and pedestrians can expect temporary lane and sidewalk closures until the work is complete.
Bicyclists will find a new a new bike lane and signal device on California that will activate the light at Broadway making the route more bike friendly.
Local business owners expressed their happiness that the bridge is back open. “The sooner the better”, said Todd Janner who owns Siskun Power Equipment at the corner of Broadway and California. “Overall it’s been a nuisance and annoying but it hasn’t hurt us too much and the construction crews and contractor have been really helpful.”
“We’re pleased to open the bridge in time for the holidays,” said Everett Mayor Ray Stephanson. “We appreciate everyone’s patience during this challenging, critical project.”
