Medical Marijuana in Everett to Stay a Nuisance

The Everett City Council tonight unanimously voted to extend the city’s ban on medical marijuana until the Washington State Legislature clarifies rules and tax implications between recreational and medicinal pot. Everett has passed rules allowing retail marijuana and expects to see its first stores open sometime next month. However due to a lack of clarity when it comes to medical marijuana guidelines Everett declared that a nuisance back in 2012. Tonight’s vote extends that action though council members and even the briefing papers for the ordinance say the issue should be re-visited if the Legislature acts.

Speaking of retail marijuana, during the citizen comments portion of the meeting, members of the audience asked Everett City Councilmembers to re-consider limiting the size of marijuana growing operations within the Everett city limits. While large processors are setting up Tier 3 growing operations just outside Everett, the city only allows Tier 1 operations. The citizens who spoke said Everett was going to be miss out on the “Green Rush” as big well-funded corporations look to build major processing facilities, especially when it comes to making edible marijuana products. No council members commented in response to what the citizens had to say.
