Got a note this week from Kate Reardon at the City that Everett is looking for artists to submit proposals for Bike Racks downtown. Not just any old bike rack will do, here are the specifications:
Project Goal
The City is seeking four artist-designed bike racks for Hoyt Avenue in Everett’s Arts District. We seek a
family of sculptural bike racks, but not identical pieces. The racks must work as stand-alone sculptural
elements as well as function as bike racks.
Project Description
Design and fabricate four bike racks that can accommodate two bikes each. Durability, ease of
maintenance and safety are necessary design criteria.
Requirements:
• Each rack must be able to support and secure two bicycles.
• Designs must meet the following criteria:
o Support the frame of the bicycle in two places
o allow for the bicycle frame and at least one wheel to be secured to the rack when both
wheels are left on the bike
o accommodate high-security U-shaped bike locks
o be securely anchored to the concrete sidewalk
o be constructed of durable, low maintenance materials
• Artists may design a rack that does not meet the above criteria, but City approval is required for
the exceptions.
Budget
The budget for the project is: $8,000 for four bike racks, including artist’s fee, travel, engineering,
materials, fabrication, transportation, documentation, insurance, taxes and oversight of installation.
Guidelines for Submissions
Design proposals must be received by April 22, 2011 and must include:
• Design proposal including conceptual drawings, materials list and fabrication method.
• Artists’ contact information (name, email, website, phone, snail mail address, etc.).
• Bio and CV: a short narrative bio as well as a complete resume of exhibitions and related work.
• 10-15 digital images of work with title, project description, location and budget.
Submissions may be mailed to:
