The City of Marysville installed nine new Purple Heart City signs at entrances throughout the city to honor military service members who were wounded or killed in combat. The signs were dedicated during an Aug. 7 ceremony in downtown Marysville marking Purple Heart Day.

The signs highlight Marysville’s designation as a Purple Heart City, which the Marysville City Council formally recognized by resolution in January 2022. A Purple Heart City publicly demonstrates its commitment to honoring Purple Heart recipients and supporting veterans, active-duty military members and their families.

“These signs are more than markers of an official designation,” Mayor Jon Nehring said. “

They let Purple Heart recipients and their families know that Marysville sees them, appreciates them and will never forget what they have endured. We are proud to honor their courage and sacrifice in this visible way.”

Snohomish County is part of the National Purple Heart Trail, a symbolic network of communities, roads and other locations that honor Purple Heart recipients. Marysville’s designation reflects the community’s longstanding support for its many veterans, active-duty military members and military families.

The Purple Heart is the nation’s oldest military decoration still in use. Its history dates to Aug. 7, 1782, when Gen. George Washington created the Badge of Military Merit. Purple Heart Day is observed annually on Aug. 7 to recognize service members who were wounded or killed while serving the country.

The new signs will remain in place year-round as a visible recognition of Purple Heart recipients and Marysville’s designation as a Purple Heart City.
