Everett firefighters extinguished an early morning duplex fire this morning in the 2300 block of Howard Avenue. Twelve residents were displaced. There were no injuries.
Everett Fire was called to the duplex shortly after 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 5, after callers reported flames showing around the structure, backyard and porch.

While crews worked to extinguish the fire, other firefighters searched both units and all floors of the duplex to ensure no one was trapped inside. All occupants had self-evacuated before firefighters arrived.
Firefighters brought the fire under control in about 15 minutes after the first engine arrived on scene, then transitioned to overhaul operations to check for fire extension and hot spots.
The fire caused extensive damage to both sides of the duplex. Two vehicles were also damaged. The American Red Cross is assisting the 12 displaced residents.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Everett Fire Marshal’s Office. It is too early to know what caused the fire.
Also aiding in the fire were South County Fire and Everett Police.
This incident serves as a reminder to the community that working smoke alarms are the first line of defense in a fire, especially overnight when people are sleeping. Smoke alarms give families critical time to evacuate safely. Families should also have a home escape plan with two ways out of each room and the home, and a designated meeting place outside. Practice the plan with everyone in the household so each person knows what to do in an emergency.
