Schack Art Center Executive Director Judy Tuohy Receives Wendt Award

Schack Art Center celebrated longtime Executive Director Judy Tuohy, who was recognized with the prestigious Richard & Nancy Wendt Award of Excellence at the Wendt & Mayor’s Arts Awards on April 23 at the Everett Performing Arts Center.

Tuohy was honored for her extraordinary 32-year leadership at Schack Art Center and her lasting impact on Everett’s arts community.

Over more than three decades, she has helped transform the organization into a vibrant, inclusive hub where artists and community members connect, create and thrive.

“I feel so blessed to have had this amazing opportunity to lead Schack Art Center over the last 32 years,” Tuohy said in her acceptance remarks.

“For me, the arts have always been about connection—bringing artists and the creative process together with our community in meaningful ways.”

Throughout her career, Tuohy has been known for her passion, persistence and ability to cultivate a strong creative community, often while working within limited resources. Under her leadership, Schack has achieved long-term financial sustainability, expanded programming and strengthened its role as a welcoming space for artists of all backgrounds.

“I am very proud of what we’ve built—a place where creativity and mentoring can flourish, where there is trust, and where all feel welcome,” Tuohy said.

Tuohy also credited the many people who contributed to Schack’s success, including board members, artists, volunteers, sponsors and staff. “The artists are the soul of our organization,” she said. “And it has been an honor to work alongside such passionate people who care deeply about making this city a creative and welcoming place.”

Established in 1992, the Wendt Award of Excellence honors individuals or organizations who have demonstrated a lifetime of outstanding support for the arts. Named after longtime Everett arts advocates Richard and Nancy Wendt, the award recognizes those whose contributions have helped shape and sustain the city’s cultural landscape.

Reflecting on the legacy of the award, Tuohy shared her appreciation for the Wendts’ impact:

“When I think about Dick Wendt and what he initiated for the city, I realize he opened the door for all of us to expand and flourish the arts in Everett—and that door is still wide open.”

As she looks ahead, Tuohy expressed confidence in Schack’s future. “Schack is in a very good place to thrive and grow long after I retire,” she said. “I’m deeply grateful to be part of a community that believes in the power of the arts to bring people together and shape who we are.”
