Two Everett Public Schools educators were recognized this weekend by the Washington Music Educators Association (WMEA) for their outstanding contributions to music education.
Heatherwood Middle School Principal Dr. Laura Wellington received the Friend of Music Award for her exceptional advocacy and leadership in the arts.
Under her leadership, particularly during post-pandemic rebuilding, Heatherwood’s performing arts participation grew from 199 students to 645 students and now reaches nearly 59% of the student body. Band increased by 152%, choir by 163%, and orchestra by 537%.
“In my 40 years as a music educator, I have had the privilege of working with many incredible administrators, but Dr. Laura Wellington is truly the best of the best,” said Lesley Moffat at the award ceremony during the 2026 Washington Music Educators Conference.
Jackson High School Orchestra Director Melanie West was named Outstanding Music Educator for her visionary leadership and regional impact. West created a comprehensive orchestra curriculum and founded the region’s first orchestra festival, connecting student musicians, educators and families. Her program consistently develops student leaders and is widely respected by music educators across the state.
“Melanie West has been a trailblazer and leader in school orchestras in our region,” said Erik Eliason. “She has built an exceptional program and continues to strengthen music education for students and educators across our state.”
Superintendent Ian B. Saltzman added,
“We are grateful for the vision and dedication Dr. Wellington and Mrs. West bring to our schools every day.” “Their leadership has strengthened music education in meaningful ways, and this recognition reflects the profound impact they have on students and our community.”
Everett Public Schools congratulates both educators for their well-deserved recognition and continued dedication to student success through music.
