Beyond the Voters’ Pamphlet: Meet City Council Candidate Marcus Nunez

EDITORS NOTE: In an effort to go beyond the information in the voter’s pamphlet, we offered all candidates an opportunity to share more about their background to help voters get a better feel for who they are as a person and how they will impact the City of Everett.

Marcus Nunez is running for Everett City Council – District 3

Marcus Nunez is running for Everett City Council District 3.

How did you get into politics?

I’ve always had a bit of an interest in politics, I remember being in Kindergarten when the recession hit in 2007, so I’d watch Komo 4 News every night with my dad. I’d watch it in the morning before school while having breakfast, and watching the news has just been something that’s stuck with me, so I’d always be keeping up with current events and in particular politics.

As I’ve gotten older, I started to see the value in actually getting involved myself in order to try and make the changes I and others want. For this particular election, it started in May 2025 during filing week, people in the community online were keeping up to date on who was running where, and wanted people to at least try and oppose all the incumbents, and I was the only person who lived in district 3 that was willing to step up.

What hobby or interest do you have that might surprise people?

I’ve played golf since I was five years old, and I love trying new courses when I’m able. I’m also a watch collector; I love learning about watches and building my own collection of watches.

Also, I love older music, I’m always listening to artists like Michael McDonald, in August I saw Toto with Christoper Cross and Men at work, I also like Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Eric Clapton, basically 60’s-80’s is my jam.

What three endorsements are you most proud of & why?

I actually don’t have any endorsements, and I’m ok with that, I understand that it might be a bit concerning and scary to back a 23-year-old with no experience, but that’s ok, because I want to do anything and everything possible to easy people’s worries and remind them I’m doing this all for the betterment of the city I’ve lived in my entire life, because I want to keep living here as long as possible.

What is something about the job many people don’t realize, and why are you a good fit for addressing that aspect of the job?

It’s a massive time commitment for not a lot of pay, which is why someone like my opponent works a day job while doing this. I however can give the council seat my full, undivided attention because I’m fortunate enough to be able to make this my full-time job.

What criticism have you received from your competitor or other people that is unfair, and why?

The biggest criticism is my lack of experience, not just in politics, but in general, which I totally understand, most 23-year-olds aren’t running for office, they’re working a full-time job and probably just finishing college. But just because I didn’t follow any sort of traditional route, doesn’t mean I’m not qualified for the job, I’m a resident of the city, this city is my home, it’s all I know and this city is something I care so deeply about, and I want this city to prosper and I want Everett to be as good as possible.

Criticize me all you want, but I don’t think anyone has the heart for this city like I do, and the more I learn about Everett, the more I care.

What are you most excited to work on if voted in?

My biggest thing that I’m most excited for, is working on trying to bring our park rangers back. I’ve said this from the beginning, the parks are such an amazing park of our city, and without the rangers, it’s just not as safe as it used to be, so I want to work on making the parks great again, especially Wiggums Hollow Park.

While it’s not a part of my district, seeing the fire that destroyed the playground, it hurt me, because I know that those kids in the neighborhood, don’t have a fun hangout spot to play at for a while, and once it’s redone, are the kids going to come back, or are they scared it’ll happen again, so they won’t bother wanting to go to the park anymore. I think that if we still had our rangers, that fire might not have even happened.
