Everett High School’s Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) has received two significant honors from the U.S. Navy’s Area 23 Command.
The unit was awarded the Bravo Zulu designation for its performance during the Annual Military Inspection (AMI) and named the Most Improved Unit for Area 23, placing it in contention for the same honor at the national level. Additionally, the unit has been notified that they were selected as a Distinguished Unit, which is the top honor for NJROTC units nationwide.
Bravo Zulu, a naval term meaning “Well Done,” is awarded to units that demonstrate outstanding performance, preparation, and professionalism during the AMI—an annual evaluation that assesses leadership, cadet knowledge, appearance, and adherence to Navy standards.
The designation as Most Improved Unit for Area 23 reflects remarkable growth across a range of program metrics, including drill proficiency, academic achievement, physical fitness, and community service. Area 23 includes dozens of NJROTC programs throughout the Pacific Northwest, making the recognition a testament to the significant strides made by Everett High’s unit over the past year. This achievement now puts the unit in the running for the Most Improved Unit in the nation, a title they last won in 2011.
“We are excited about the opportunity to be considered for national recognition and grateful for the support of our school community and district,” said Principal Kelly Shepherd.
The unit has also been recognized for its emphasis on community service. Cadet Kauk noted,
“Community service was a big part, and we did a lot of community service this year. I didn’t know I would love community service as much as I do now.”
Cadet Regan shared his pride in the accomplishment, stating,
“Definitely well earned, and I’m proud of the work we have put in this year.” Cadet Reyes added, “It feels great to have our hard work validated.”
Though based at Everett High School, the NJROTC program proudly includes students from Cascade High School and H.M. Jackson High School. This inclusive, districtwide opportunity brings together cadets from across the community who share a passion for service, leadership, and civic responsibility.
