Today the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office announced that fully commissioned deputies and reserve deputies at the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office are now authorized to wear western-style cowboy hats as part of their uniform.
The cowboy hats, which are not required, will be purchased by the deputies themselves.
“Although wearing the hats is optional, our deputies will continue to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, ensuring these hats are worn cleanly and appropriately.”
Washington State Patrol troopers have long worn blue “campaign hats” to go with their French blue uniforms. Clark County Sheriff added cowboy hats to their arsenal last July.
Uniforms do play a role in recruitment. We’ve certainly seen it in college football recruiting and in the corporate world. Relaxing tattoo policies has helped with law enforcement and military recruitment, so something as simple as allowing cowboy hats to their uniforms could certainly help the Sheriff’s Office attract more candidates.
