Keeping Track of the Seahawk Free Agency Frenzy

March 10, 2025

Everett Sports

After offensive coaching changes in the offseason, we’re now seeing major changes to the Seahawks roster in 2025. Free agency season is officially on and the Seahawks have been busy.

Quarterbacks

Seahawks new QB, Sam Darnold

Geno Smith is out – Geno Smith was expected to be re-signed, but wanted more money than the Seahawks were willing to pay. But that didn’t stop former Seahawk Coach and now Las Vegas Raiders Coach, Pete Carroll from making that deal.

Carroll made a trade with the Seahawks to sign Geno Smith to the Raiders. The Raiders gave the Seahawks a 3rd-round pick as compensation and are expected to extend Smith’s contract in the neighborhood of $40-45 million a year.

Sam Darnold is in – Darnold comes from the Vikings after his best year in his 7-year NFL career. The Vikings traded Darnold to the Seahawks for a 3rd-round pick. For next season, the Vikings are banking on their 2024 first-round pick, JJ McCarthy, who tore his meniscus during the 2024 preseason.

Darnold is expected to sign a 3-year, $110.5 million deal with the Seahawks. This will be his 5th team in eight years.

Wide Receivers

Cooper Kupp is in – Former Super Bowl MVP, Cooper Kupp, finally gets to come home. Kupp grew up in Yakima, played at Eastern, and finally gets to play for the Seahawks in a 3-year, $45 million agreement. Kupp, when healthy, is known as an excellent route runner, great hands, and a great blocker, which will work well for the new offense.

DK Metcalf is out – After mentioning he wanted to be traded to “a contender in a warm-weather city,” DK Metcalf got the trade and the money he wanted, but not the weather. The Seahawks traded DK to the Pittsburgh Steelers for a 2nd-round pick and flipped 6th & 7th round picks. Metcalf is expected to sign a 5-year, $150 million contract.

Tyler Lockett is out – Tyler Lockett was drafted by the Seahawks in 2015 and has been a loyal Seahawks throughout, but 10 years later, the Seahawks decided to release him. Lockett was due a hefty $17 million salary. Lockett is now free to sign with any NFL team he wants.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling – MVS was signed to a 1-year, $5.5 million deal. He’s a 30-year old 6’4″, 206 lb speedy receiver. The Seahawks will be his 5th team. Last year he played eight games and caught 17 balls for 385 yards and four touchdowns. He’s a deep threat receiver.

Seattle Seahawks Linebacker Ernest Jones IV

Re-signed Players:

Ernest Jones IV – The player most analysts attributed for the Seahawks defensive turnaround last season. No surprise the Seahawks made signing Ernest Jones IV a priority. Jones signed a 3-year, $33 million contract.

DT Jarran Reed – Reed signed a 4-year, $25 million contract. Reed was an effective veteran in 2024, racking up 45 tackles and 4.5 sacks in Mike Macdonald’s first-year defense.

TE Brady Russell – Russell was an exclusive rights free agent, meaning he could only sign with the Seahawks if they tender him. And tender him they did ($1.03 million). Russell mostly played special teams last season before ending up on injured reserve.

CB Josh Jobe – cornerback Josh Jobe was also a restricted free agent. The Seahawks signed a contract instead of the option for the RFA tender. Jobe came off the practice squad in week 7 last season and ended up playing in the next 10 games, starting six of them.

Other signed players:

Defensive Lineman, Demarcus Lawrence was signed to a 3-year deal worth up to $42 million. He’s a 32-year old Pro Bowler from Dallas with 3 sacks in four games played last year.

The Seahawks signed a 1-year, $4.75 million contract with OL Josh Jones. Don’t confused Josh Jones with the safety who was on the Seahawks in 2021 and 2022. This Josh ones was a 3rd round pick by the Cardinals in 2020, but was traded to the Texans, then played the 2024 season for the Ravels as a depth player at multiple spots.

LB Josh Ross was re-signed for a 1-year, $2 million deal.

WR Cody White was re-signed to a 1-year deal.

Other released players:

On March 12th, CB Trey Brown signed a 1-year deal with the 49ers and Stone Forsythe signed a 1-year deal with the NY Giants.

On March 11th, OL Laken Tomlinson departed to sign a 1-year $5 million contract with the Houston Texans.

On March 4th, the Seahawks released T George Fant, S Rayshawn Jenkins, LB Dre’Mont Jones and DT Roy Robertson-Harris. This freed up nearly $30 million in cap space. The Giants signed Roy Robertson-Harris on a two-year, $9 million deal.

On February 21st, the Seahawks released CB Ryan Cooper and WR Cornell Powell.

There are several players on the Seahawks roster that are unrestricted free agents:

  • TE Pharaoh Brown
  • NT Johnathan Hankins
  • OLB Trevis Gipson
  • S K’Von Wallace
  • CB Artie Burns

Seahawks also have exclusive rights on OLB Joshua Onujiogu. They also have one more restricted free agent, WR Jelon Darden.

Between the upcoming draft and the rest of the free agent trading period, the Seahawks will need to solidify their offensive line and find replacements for the loss of DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett at receiver.

They now have the cap space and draft picks to make some interesting moves.
