Another decades-old murder cold case is solved in Everett. Last year Everett police, with help from the Marysville Crime Lab, solved the 1984 Judy Weaver cold case. This time they solved the 1989 cold case of Mary Ann Daniels.

Back on February 1st, 1989, Mary Ann Daniels was found murdered in her residence located in the 2100 block of Hoyt Ave in the Bayside neighborhood of Everett.

Mary Ann Daniels was a 33-year-old disabled woman who had been placed into transitional living by her caseworker. The case had stumped investigators since 1989.

Murder happened in the 2100 block of Hoyt

In the decades following her murder, DNA technology has become increasingly sophisticated, which was key to solving the 36-year-old cold case.

Joseph Andrew Jacquez, a former resident of Everett, was identified using Forensic Genetic Genealogy (FGG) from biological material left on Mary Ann’s body.

This technique involves using DNA analysis to identify shared blocks of DNA between a forensic sample and potential relatives in genealogy databases.

DNA from the actual instrument of her death has been identified as belonging to Jacquez.

Everett Police Detective Susan Logothetti, in partnership with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, arrested the suspect, Joseph Lacquez, in connection with the 1989 murder of Mary Ann Daniels.

The suspect was booked into jail locally in Clark County, Nevada and will be extradited to Snohomish County.

“I want to commend our police department and our partner agencies for their dedication to getting justice for victims like Mary Ann,” said Everett Mayor Cassie Franklin. “My heart goes out to Mary Ann’s loved ones as they continue to grieve her loss.”

Everett Police Chief John DeRousse added:

“Our investigators diligently pursue justice for the victims of violent crime in our community,” said DeRousse. “We are thankful for Detective Logothetti’s perseverance in this investigation. Due to her hard work, this suspect will be held accountable nearly 36 years later.”

Mary’s family finally has closure. Here are their statements:

“I appreciate all the hard work and dedication that Detective Logothetti and others put into finding the person who murdered my sister.

She faced unfortunate circumstances while living in a transitional rental house which her social worker placed her in.  She should have protected her from this happening, but instead put her in danger, and in the end, Mary Ann lost her life.  She had a hard life and is now at peace. Thanks to all that made this happen.”
– Sister, Sandi Daniels Lundin

“Mary Ann was trusting, carefree and always believed the good in people.  She has never been forgotten by her family.”
– Brother, Terry Lee Saline
