Training the next wave of Maritime Professionals

The Maritime Institute and Workforce Snohomish proudly announce the launch of the first Mariner Bootcamp training cohort at the new Maritime Institute facility at the Port of Everett.

This intensive training program, set to run from September 30th to October 25th, 2024, is dedicated to equipping new entrants and specifically targeting dislocated workers and currently unemployed community members with the foundational skills necessary for successful careers in the maritime industry.

The Mariner Bootcamp is guiding a new cohort of aspiring maritime professionals through a comprehensive four-week curriculum that includes both theoretical instruction and practical, hands-on experiences, providing participants with essential maritime skills including navigation, vessel operations, safety procedures, and emergency response protocols. The program emphasizes real-world applications and problem-solving skills necessary for the maritime industry, preparing participants to earn essential industry certifications and endorsements. Graduates are expected to enter the maritime sector as qualified candidates for a variety of roles, from deckhands to navigational watch officers, bolstering the industry with fresh talent and new perspectives.

The Maritime Administration (MARAD) has projected a shortfall of about 1,800 credentialed mariners, a gap that will only widen as many of the current workforce approaches retirement age. This presents a vital need for the industry to recruit and train the next generation of skilled mariners to maintain the operational capacity required for both commercial and national security purposes.

“As the maritime industry continues to face the challenges of an aging workforce, programs like the Mariner Boot Camp are critical in preparing a new generation to fill these vital roles. This session is particularly significant as we strive to replenish the workforce with skilled professionals who are ready to navigate the complexities of modern maritime operations.”
–Celeste Race, Workforce Snohomish Business Engagement Specialist

The program culminates with a graduation ceremony on October 25, where participants will showcase their newly acquired maritime skills and receive industry-recognized credentials. Beyond certification, graduates will also receive job placement support, including networking opportunities, resume-building assistance, and interview coaching, equipping them with the tools necessary to secure positions within the maritime sector. Community members, industry partners, and media representatives are encouraged to attend the ceremony to celebrate the achievements of these future maritime professionals.

workforceThe next session of the Mariner Bootcamp is scheduled to begin in February 2025, with additional sessions planned throughout the year. Prospective students are encouraged to register early to secure their spot, as we anticipate continued demand for this vital training program.
