Everett Spreading Affirmations With the Push of a Button

Downtown Everett’s Affirmation Station

The city of Everett has recently installed an interactive art sculpture by Timothy C. Flood, entitled “Affirmation Station.”

The sculpture looks like a regular pedestrian walk signal, but a button on the sign’s post invites the viewer to press it, which activates audio of affirmations, like “Hey, you’re doing a great job – keep it up” or a little humor, like “That tickles.”

Atop the approximately 10-foot cast aluminum sculpture, instead of your traditional walk signs are lit boxes containing text affirmations, “YOU ARE STRONG,” and “YOU ARE IMPORTANT.”

Another box contains the words “YOU ARE” and underneath is an LED scroll of glowing adjectives like “awesome,” “beautiful,” “powerful”, and 250 other positive thoughts.

Meant to be an art piece that invites participation, “Affirmation Station” is a thought-provoking and fun work of contemporary public art.

“Affirmation Station” draws people to it, to interact with it, or to shoot a social media video of it. Its uplifting messages are intended to be elevating for the community and visitors.

Timothy C Flood is a Colorado-based interactive artist. Similar affirmation signs have been posted in several Colorado cities, plus Iowa and Wisconsin.

The city funded the project with 2023 special event revenue and lodging tax grant funds intended for placemaking enhancements. “Affirmation Station” art was originally discovered by former Cultural Arts Commissioner Deb Fox in 2021.

“Affirmation Station” is located in front of the new public restrooms in the 2900 block of Wetmore Avenue in Downtown Everett, on the north side of city hall. It will surely be a hit with visitors at the Everett Farmers Market, held at the location on Sundays.
