The road construction work on State Route 529 in Everett just got a whole lot more interesting. Or should we say a “Hole” lot more interesting.
WSDOT crews discovered a sinkhole at Northbound 529 north of East Marine View Drive.
What caused the sinkhole, you may ask? It appears an individual in Everett had been tunneling underneath the road.
The tunnel under the hole was about 3 feet wide and four feet deep. As we suspected, the tunnel was underneath the end of a bridge (see our picture of the location.
Crews are repaired the damaged spot by 3pm the same day after the hole was discovered around 9am on Tuesday, July 2nd. WSDOT says the hole emergency repair was unrelated to the SR 529 Snohomish River bridge work.
The hole was about 1.5 feet in diameter on the surface and would have done some serious damage to a car, especially if it sunk in further.
This isn’t the first time a man-made tunnel was discovered in Everett.
In 2021, we reported on a hole that raised a 3 alarm technical rescue near the I-5 offramp at Pacific Avenue. Luckily there wasn’t a person inside.
Traffic crossing the river toward Marysville had to use I-5 at Everett Avenue. Everett Transit temporarily removed the Riverside Business Park stop from route 4.
This is a developing story, we will add more information as it comes available.
