Police Blotter

shootingA disturbing press release out this morning from the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office this morning after a 1-year-old died this weekend and SCSO says the death may be linked to Fentanyl. Here’s what we received.

Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Unit (SIU) detectives are investigating the death of a child that occurred on Sunday, May 7. Deputies responded to Swedish Hospital in Mill Creek at 5:30 p.m. for a report from hospital staff of an unresponsive 1-year-old who was brought in by her mother. The 1-year-old was transported to Seattle Children’s Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

During the investigation, Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Unit (SIU) detectives discovered the child was in the care of her 37-year-old mother on Saturday, May 6 and Sunday, May 7. The child was staying at a hotel in Everett with her mother. The initial investigation by the detectives has led them to believe that fentanyl was being smoked inside the hotel room prior to the child becoming unresponsive. Detectives believe the child’s death may be due to fentanyl exposure. Toxicology reports are pending.

Detectives served a search warrant on the hotel room to collect evidence from the scene. This remains an active investigation.

The 37-year-old mother was arrested on Sunday for an outstanding domestic violence warrant for an unrelated charge out of Edmonds Police Department. She was transported and booked into the Snohomish County Jail.

Positive identification of the decedent, as well as cause and manner of death will come from the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office.
