When you’re a single mom of two kids you really don’t have time to take care of yourself, even if you have the best intentions. That’s a situation Carrie DeRousse found herself in nearly two decades ago.

“I’d signed up for a massage membership and never felt I had time to use it,” Carrie told me when we met last week. “Even when I remarried and had a partner I still was working, commuting, taking care of kids and running myself ragged in the corporate hospitality industry.”

Carrie took a step back, got off the corporate track and took a good hard look at what she loved and wanted to do. “I care about people, care about helping them and bringing them up,” Carrie said. So she went to school to become a massage therapist.

She also had a vision for when she completed her schooling to create a place where people don’t just get a massage but where they can truly relax, have some “me time” and get in tune with their bodies.

Carrie first began in a studio at a fitness center in Stanwood. Living in Everett, she drove past a building on 41st street with an amazing view of the Cascades. Drove by it every day for two years until one day she finally stopped, took a look inside and knew she could create just the space she envisioned.

It was a lot of work but Decide Massage and Wellness is going on their fourth year here in Everett, Washington. Inside you’ll find an amazing space that’s tranquil, modern, well appointed and surprisingly roomy. Sessions start with a foot soak and cup of tea, there’s a sauna and foot massage before the treatment begins.

Carrie says clients come for many reasons. Stress is one, but lots of clients come due to specific aches and pains. “My clients come here looking for something besides medication that simply masks the pain,” she explained. “I’m a deep tissue specialist and it’s rewarding to show people how this is going to feel and to teach people about their body and what they can do to fix themselves.”

Most people come once a month which helps them keep their muscles pliable and in good health. “While a chiropractor deals with bones and a physical therapist deals with rehab, we deal with everything related to muscle,” Carrie explained.

There are three other massage therapists and also an esthetician. All have flexible schedules to help people who have made the decision to take time for self-care.

Another unique feature at Decide Massage and Wellness are special moments. From a couples massage date night that begins with a gourmet meal on fine china in front of the fireplace, to converting their couples room into a private theater where you and your friends can enjoy a movie and a foot massage they offer lots of options.

Carrie says they’ve done a pearls and PJs party where friends dressed up for a beautiful dinner together, followed by dressing down into PJs for therapy and conversation. “Our fireplace room is flexible and we’ve done psychic readings, birthday and anniversary parties, girls night out and even proposals,” she said. “This is such a great place to decide to take care of yourself.”
