Citing Safety Concerns Everett Transit Moves Bus Stop A Bit Further Away From Former Bank On Evergreen Way

December 23, 2022

Everett, Everett Government

This sign was posted at the stop on Thursday.

The stop that has been closed is right next to a SWIFT stop.

The new stop is about 120 south at the edge of the former bank lot.

A bus at the new stop on Thursday afternoon.

Yesterday Everett Transit announced it was permanently moving the City of Everett bus stop next to the Swift Bus Stop in the 8500 block of Evergreen Way, about 120 feet south. Here is the alert posted for riders:

*** Rider Alert ***
Effective Dec. 22, 2022 | Everett Transit stop #5125, Evergreen Way & E. Casino Rd, will be permanently closed effective immediately. Route 7 customers will need to catch the bus at Everett Transit stop #5136, located slightly south.

We reached out to the City of Everett about the move and received the following information from City spokesperson Simone Tarver via email.

“Everett Transit made the decision to close bus stop #5125 due to frequent challenges experienced at that location with individuals congregating and engaging in behaviors that could potentially put transit users, bus operators and transit supervisors at increased risk of harm.

It is a top priority to create a safe and welcoming environment for all that use transit and also for our hard working transit staff.

A temporary stop has been set up at Evergreen Way and 86th street which is 120 feet (approximately 3 bus lengths) south of the current bus stop.

This location was selected to minimize the disruption to service in the area and allow Everett Transit to continue serving transit riders in this part of the community.

The temporary stop is still close enough to the current stop to easily allow transfers to Swift. Additionally, the challenges experienced at bus stop #5125 have not been observed in this alternate location.

Everett Police walk the bank parking lot looking for evidence and collecting shell casings on December 2nd.

That area has been a frequent trouble spot for Everett Police and the manager of the Fred Meyer store in that block has gone to the Everett City Council asking for help in dealing with crime in that area.

Everett Police have stepped up patrols but crime continues to be a problem in that part of Evergreen Way including a recent increase in shots fired calls at that former bank location.
