A bit after 12:30 PM Monday afternoon, a man walked into the Snohomish County Courthouse lobby in downtown Everett, Washington carrying multiple weapons.

That caused the stoppage of several court hearings, a lockdown and evacuation of multiple county offices, the closure of several blocks in downtown Everett and the mobilization of City, County, State and Federal law enforcement agencies to deal with an unknown threat.

Three hours after it began, the situation ended peacefully as the man surrendered to authorities. He had been talking with officers, spending a lot of the time sitting in an office chair with weapons laid out on the floor in front of him.

While the incident happened in downtown Everett, the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for the security of the courthouse. SCSO managed the operation and received assistance from Everett Police, Washington State Patrol, FBI and ATF.

Specialty units included the Region 1 SWAT Team and Washington State Patrol Interagency Bomb Squad.

After surrendering to the SWAT Team the suspect was taken through an underground passageway to the Snohomish County Jail. He is a 32-year-old man from Woodinville, Washington and is expected to make an initial appearance in Everett District Court Tuesday morning.

The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Department says they will have more to say after the court hearing. At this time no reason was given for why the man entered the lobby of the building with hand guns, rifles and at least one large knife. It is not clear at this point if he ever made active threats to use any of those weapons.

He never got past the metal detectors or security screening of the courthouse lobby and was immediately confronted by security and armed officers as he entered the doors of the building.

There were no injuries. We’ll pass along updates as they are made available by the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office.
