Overnight Lane Closures on Northbound I-5 In Everett Saturday And Sunday – Reductions Next Monday Thru Friday

December 9, 2022

Everett

While always with the caveat that it’s subject to weather conditions, looks like road construction on northbound I-5 through Everett, Washington is a go this weekend. Here are the two projects Washington State DOT is referencing.

Project overview #1:
This weekend, we will have contractor crews replace the damaged girder on the 12th Street Bridge over Interstate 5 between Everett and Marysville. In addition to replacing the girder, part of the bridge deck and barrier will be rebuilt.

This work will take place from 11 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, to 4 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 11 and from 11 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, to 4 a.m. Monday, Sept. 12. Full northbound I-5 closures will be from Marine View Drive to SR 529. Traffic will detour via Marine View Drive and SR 529, which could affect drivers and people who live near detour routes. In addition to the full closures, there will be up to 30 one- and two-lane closures in both directions of I-5, as well as additional shoulder closures.

On Sept. 27, 2021 a semi-truck transporting an excavator on I-5 struck the 12th Street overpass, damaging a girder supporting the bridge. We closed the eastbound lane of the bridge, reducing it to a single lane, to reduce weight on the damaged girder.

About 280 vehicles travel across the bridge on any given day including vehicles serving the Everett’s Wastewater Treatment Plant, adjacent agricultural land and wildlife park on the east side of I-5.

Late-night drivers heading north on Interstate 5 through Everett should plan for possible delays Monday, Dec. 12, through Friday, Dec. 16, while workers smooth new concrete pavement panels to match existing pavement.

Contractor crews will work nightly from 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 12, through 6 a.m. Friday, Dec. 16. Northbound I-5 will be reduced to one lane between Lowell Road and Marine View Drive. All lanes of northbound I-5 will reopen by 6 a.m. each morning. This work is weather-dependent.

Crews will use diamond-tipped grinders to smooth out high spots in the recently replaced concrete panels. The work is part of WSDOT’s project to rehabilitate northbound I-5 between Lowell Road and Marine View Drive.

After this, crews will take a break until next spring when they’ll return to replace about 30 more damaged concrete panels and four expansion joints. This year the contractor replaced about 150 of 180 damaged panels.

People who are traveling can get real-time traffic information on mobile phones with the WSDOT traffic app and by following the WSDOT traffic Twitter feed.
