Drivers heading north on Interstate 5 through Everett should plan for longer weeknight travel times tonight, Nov. 28, through Thursday, Dec. 15, while workers damaged pavement.

When the weather permits, Washington State Department of Transportation contractor crews will work for 13 nights, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday, Nov. 28, through Thursday, Dec. 15. At least one lane will be open in the downtown Everett work zone between Lowell Road and Marine View Drive. All lanes of northbound I-5 will reopen by 6 a.m. the following morning.

Between Nov. 28 and Dec. 6, workers will replace damaged concrete panels that date back to the original construction of this section of I-5 in the 1960s. Between Dec. 5 and Dec. 15, crews will use diamond-tipped grinders to smooth out high spots in the travel lanes. The work is part of WSDOT’s project to rehabilitate northbound I-5 between Lowell Road and Marine View Drive.

A contingent work night is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 11. No work is schedule to occur on the nights of Dec. 2, 3, 9 and 10.

People who are traveling can get real-time traffic information on mobile phones with the WSDOT traffic app and by following the WSDOT traffic Twitter feed.

In addition there is additional work planned beyond  Marine View Drive starting Sunday December 4th.

Northbound Interstate 5 will close at Marine View Drive in Everett from 12:01 to 4 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 4, and Monday, Dec. 5, so crews can replace a girder on the damaged 12th Street Bridge. Traffic will need to detour via Marine View Drive and State Route 529.

Contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation have been conducting overnight lane reductions along this section of I-5 to prepare to replace the girder. It was damaged in September 2021 when an excavator on the back of a truck struck the girder, breaking out a chunk of it and damaging tensioning wires.

The contractor, Granite Construction, will focus much of the work on the northbound side of the interstate, although travelers should prepare for sporadic southbound I-5 lane reductions.

During the freeway closures, the 12th Street Bridge will be closed.

Overnight closures
As crews prepare to replace the girder, they will reduce northbound I-5 to one lane between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. on weeknights. Southbound I-5 may have weeknight single lane closures from 7:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. Work will not take place during the Thanksgiving holiday long weekend.

Damaged girder
Because of the damaged girder, the 12th Street Bridge is reduced to one lane with temporary traffic controls to limit weight on the structure. The first night that northbound I-5 is closed, Dec. 3, crews will remove the damaged girder. The following night they will install the new girder. Once it is in place, the crews will rebuild the bridge deck and barrier.
