The cameras could go active in 2023.

Back in 2008 the City Council serving at that time approved an ordinance allowing automated traffic enforcement within the city limits of Everett, Washington.

Tonight, the Everett City Council voted to issue a request for proposals to provide an automated traffic safety camera program that would operate red light cameras at six intersections and a pair of speed cameras to monitor the school zone in front of Horizon Elementary School in south Everett.

Below is the list of intersections proposed for the Red-Light cameras.

9 cameras would cover these 6 locations.

The initial contract would be for five years with the Request For Proposals due back in May, a contract award to be set for August and the implementation period of six to eight months means the cameras likely would not be active until some time in early 2023.

The cost of the ticket is $124.00 and would not go against a driver’s insurance but be treated like a parking ticket. Concerns have been raised that this would impact communities of color and low-income residents at a higher level than others in Everett. The vote was 6-1 to move ahead with council member Paula Rhyne casting the lone no vote.
